CASE STUDY NFI GROUP
OVERVIEW
SMG was providing a service of packaging the previous EVCC supplier’s hardware in an in-house designed mechanical enclosure to provide environmental protection to the product. Because of the life phase of the product, reliability concerns from the market, and SMG’s close location to the customer we saw an opportunity to better support them through a custom designed module.
SMG engaged with the customer’s engineering team to fully understand their system requirements and designed an EVCC platform from the ground up for their specific application complying with the various industry standards required in this field.
THE RESULT
The resulting product is the first North American designed EVCC that encompasses industry leading functionality including compliance to the latest ISO 15118 standards for depot and pantograph charging as well as Vehicle-to-grid (V2G) functionality. The electronics were designed around a newly introduced Power-line Communications PLC to ensure long term availability in the market. Overall, the platform will continue to be updated as ISO 15118 and related standards evolve. It went from whiteboard concepts to physical prototypes in 12-months and release to market in 24-months.
CONCLUSION
SMG’s EVCC product is manufactured in-house at our Winnipeg facility using a state-of-the-art SMT manufacturing line as well as our mechanical assembly capabilities. Off-the-shelf electronic components are sourced through our distribution network with custom mechanical components sourced internationally through our in-country procurement teams. Our in-house production and sourcing capabilities allowed SMG to provide a competitively priced product to the customer.
NFI GROUP
New Flyer Electrical Engineering team first engaged with SMG in 2021 to discuss a joint development partnership for a next-gen controller for our vehicle platform. By early 2022, we had a full product requirements document in place and had fully kicked-off the development efforts. As we approach the final quarter of 2023, we are now wrapping up final prototype testing and completing initial production cut-in launch plans. While the final production launch is still in progress, overall, New Flyer has been very pleased with the level of engagement and responsiveness of the SMG team in expediting issue resolution as well as the adaptability that has been shown in adjusting product requirements throughout the testing and validation process. Overall, the project has remained on track so far thanks to the hard work and cooperation that continues to be fostered across our mutual Engineering teams.
